Sioux City North 2017-18 Preview

Sioux City North Stars

Class 4A- Missouri River Conference

2016-17 Record: 6-16 (2-10 MRAC)

(Lost in substate quarterfinal to Sioux City West 52-46)

Head Coach: Shawn Miller

After a dismal 2016-17 campaign, head coach Shawn Miller is looking to turn a program around that failed to win at least 10 games for the first time in seven years. With a more experienced team that returns two of its top four scorers, Miller’s junior-led squad should show improvement in Year 2.

Junior guard Trent Frerichs has two years of varsity experience under his belt and returns as the Stars’ top returning playmaker. Frerichs was productive on both ends of the floor last season, as he averaged 12.7 points per game and grabbed 82 defensive rebounds. The Stars will lean on juniors Nick Opsahl and Tyrell Blakey in the backcourt as well. Opsahl scored 8.5 ppg and came down with 82 total rebounds, while Blakey led the team in assists (41). There is no doubt that this pair will step up and contribute more on the offensive end this year.

Junior forwards Devonta Cobbs and Austin Wilshire played sparingly last season off the bench, but will be asked to provide interior muscle to a team that lacks size and an inside presence. The Stars also add Storm Lake senior transfer Kuot Ngut to the mix, and will look for production from both junior Hunter Walker and sophomore Nate Reed.

For North to have success, it must again rely on driving the lane, outside shooting and its ability to get to the free-throw line. The Stars were fifth in Class 4A in free-throw attempts last season.
