South Sioux City 2017-18 Preview

South Sioux City Cardinals

Class B- River Cities Conference

2016-17 Record: 3-20 (1-7 RVC)

(Lost to Roncalli Catholic 61-42 in District Play)

Head Coach: Terry Comstock

Believe it or not, four years ago Terry Comstock and South Sioux City were winning their third Class B State Championship in four years. The Cardinals have fell on hard times by winning only seven total games the past two seasons, but this may be the year where South Sioux City can get things turned around with a more experienced team.

After setting a standard of playing in the state tournament, Comstock has had to rebuild the program the past few seasons. Seniors Denten Porter and Graham Palsma led the way in scoring last season, but the Cardinals lacked varsity experience and depth to be competitive against a majority of their opponents.

Brad Hartnett is the top returning scorer, as he averaged 4.7 points per game and grabbed 79 total rebounds. The 6-5 junior, along with senior Trey Wilson and junior Elijah Strom, will be relied on heavily this season with a group of sophomores in the backcourt. Kaden Sailors, who finished second on the team last year in assists (39), will headline the backcourt and be joined by Jake Aitken and Drew Parker.

South Sioux City won two of its final four games last season and hope to build off that momentum heading into the upcoming year. With a group that Comstock says has continued to make major strides in the offseason, this may finally be the season where the Cardinals begin to get back on track.
