Bishop Heelan 2017-18 Preview

Bishop Heelan Catholic Crusaders

Class 4A- Missouri River Conference

2016-17 Record: 17-7 (8-4 MRAC)

(Lost in Substate Final to Sergeant Bluff-Luton 53-51)

Head Coach: Andy Foster

The Crusaders feel they let a trip to the state tournament slip away from them last season and have revenge on their mind. With North Dakota Commit Elijah Hazekamp back, along with an experienced group of seniors, this will be Andy Foster’s best team yet.

Hazekamp returns as the Crusaders’ top returning scorer and rebounder after earning All-State honors last season. The 6-6 senior averaged 17.7 points per game and recorded 298 total rebounds, which was the third best in Class 3A. Heelan also returns starters Jack Boever, Bryce Reynolds, Colin Kasperbauer and Brenden Roder.

Boever has the ability to cause problems for opponents when he’s involved in the offense and shooting the ball. With Kyrese Peck gone, expect Boever to surpass his 10.1 ppg and be an even more dangerous three-point shooter. Reynolds also returns to the Heelan backcourt following a foot injury that kept him out the final month of the season. Reynolds averaged 9.5 ppg in his 11 games of action last season and will start at point guard. Senior Eli Mollet and junior Tommy Schiltz will be key contributors again this season.

Getting through substate is no easy task, but the Crusaders should have what is takes to clinch a spot in the Class 3A State Tournament for the first time since 2012.
